First victory...

And so the story goes.

The league match was not that difficult overall.
However their top pair was good, while the other two pairs were lousy, so we ended up winning rather easily. Alas, in the actual single meaningful match I lost and that was quite a disappointment. Carl and I were the first pair so we took their first pair on straightaway, and we ground out a good 21-18 first game victory. Sensing a winning start, we went into the second set confident of greater things to come, but we didn't hold on to them and lost 14-18. Considering it was the first time we were playing together in competition (and the 4th set we were playing together since being paired up) playing in a rubber isn't so bad. The problem was we made some basic mistakes and got pulled back by the dogged opponents who began to clear the shuttle because we didn't seem too comfortable attacking the shuttle from the back. Easy points were lost and they took the tie 21-14 again. The other two sets were tame affairs, us winning 21-12, 21-11 and then 21-11, 21-11 without needing to play at our best. But when we had to/should have, we failed.

Worse still (for our club), all of us lost to their top pair, in identical 2-1 matches. At least it meant that Carl and I as a pair wasn't too bad within the standard of out own club, but we ought to have won it. Had the other opponents been tougher (and it usually is) we might have run into all sorts of problems already.

In all my "years" of playing in the local leagues (twice in Leicester in 2 years, then once in Cardiff now) I have only ever won one set, and that was in 3 games I think with those 15-points-per-set days. Things might be looking up still!
